While pausing for a drink, I heard some small birds chattering away in an alarmed manner. I went to investigate and was thrilled to see a morepork or ruru – New Zealand's best-known native owl – perched on a branch above the track. It was the only time I'd ever seen a morepork either in the wild or in daylight.
